The first divers watch was introduced in 1932, however it was not intended for consumer use. The need for a divers watch in that time was for the military primarily. Omega SA, a watch making company based in Switzerland rich in history and nostalgia, was the first to produce a divers watch. They produced watches which are recognized throughout history in many ways, such as the first watch on the moon, the watch worn by James Bond in many more recent films, and the official device for keeping time at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
A diving watch is designed to survive deep underwater, Omega SA, as stated above, is credited for creating the first divers watch, but over the years various watches have been developed. In the 50's, the Fifty Fathoms waterproof watches, made by Lip-Blancpain of France, were distributed to various countries for military purposes such as the combat diver teams. Jacques Coustea and his divers also wore the Fifty Fathoms watch in the underwater film called, "Le Monde Du Silence." In 1954 the Submariner was introduced, which later became the preferred watch for James Bond in the first ten 007 films, due to this, the Submariner is a very sought after collectors divers watch. These early watches were rated for 100-200 meters underwater, but in the 60's, with sea-bound work being done, further need and development brought about watches that could go 610 meters down. Today, of course, the professional need for a divers watch is much less frequent and they are generally replaced by electronic dive-computers worn on the wrist.
Since the development of more high-tech equipment being used for professional diving needs, the divers watch has become less of a need and more of a novelty. They still maintain the characteristics that would be expected of a divers watch, but they are typically purchased for personal use and based on beauty and craftsmanship. Omega Swatch Group is still a big leader with a long line of very attractive and highly functional watches.
The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Olympic Timeless Collection Black Men's Watch, a meticulously designed divers watch from Omega. Omega also offers the Omega Men's Seamaster 300M "James Bond" Automatic Chronometer Watch priced at around 00 to 00. As well as having being adorned with many attractive features and breathtaking stylization, this watch is an automatic watch which functions without a battery, it powers with the movement of your arm.
It is probably safe to say that most of the divers watches sold today never actually see the depths they are rated to handle. They are though, a stylized and idolized addition to any mans wardrobe. Many high class individuals and movie stars endorse and wear these watches, as well as some divers though I'm sure.
